Solar modules have no moving parts, but the complete system includes wiring, mounting hardware, an inverter, monitoring, disconnects, and sometimes batteries. A useful maintenance plan watches the whole system—not only whether the glass looks dusty.
Begin with monitoring, not a garden hose
Check the monitoring app or portal regularly and learn the system’s normal seasonal pattern. Production changes with cloud cover, day length, heat, snow, and shade, so compare similar periods rather than one sunny hour with one cloudy hour. The U.S. Department of Energy’s solar performance and longevity guidance recommends combining performance monitoring with preventive, corrective, and cleaning work.
If production drops unexpectedly, first check for a monitoring outage, inverter alert, new shade, a tripped device, or utility interruption. Do not open electrical cabinets or remove connectors yourself. Record the alert and contact the installer or a qualified solar service provider.
Clean only when conditions justify it
Rain can remove some loose dust, but pollen, bird debris, leaves, sap, and grime may remain. Roof pitch, nearby trees, road dust, weather, and panel position all affect soiling. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Photovoltaic Module Soiling Map demonstrates that soiling varies by location and site; a national cleaning rule is not a property-specific answer.
Ask the installer or module manufacturer what cleaning method preserves the warranty. Avoid abrasive tools, harsh chemicals, pressure washing, stepping on panels, or working when modules are hot. Compare the likely production recovered with the professional cleaning cost before scheduling recurring service.
Inspect safely after wind, hail, or ice
After severe weather, look from the ground for broken glass, displaced panels, loose conduit, debris, roof damage, or a new monitoring fault. Do not touch damaged equipment or exposed wiring. A visual check cannot reveal every electrical or internal module problem. If the array took a direct impact, shows visible damage, or produces substantially less power without a clear weather explanation, request a qualified inspection.
Plan maintenance before signing a contract
Ask who monitors alerts, who performs warranty service, what an inspection costs, how roof work is coordinated, and whether labor is covered separately from equipment. Keep the contract, permits, one-line diagram, warranties, model numbers, commissioning report, and service records together.
Consistent monitoring records can also help a technician separate ordinary seasonal variation from a developing equipment, shade, or soiling problem.
